We are so excited to announce that guest artist and hilarious comedian, writer, & ventriloquist, Michael Paul who hails from Los Angeles, California, will be teaching character development for us! He’s a master of improvisation, crowd work, and his characters are dynamic and expressive. Really we just adore this guy & can’t wait for this experience!

WHAT: 

Whether you want to build a character from the ground up, expand a character you’re already working on, or refresh a character you’ve had for awhile, Michael Paul has the experience necessary to help you bring your characters to life!

Michael Paul will lead you through creating believable characters with strong viewpoints and personalities that can carry you through scene-work for any style of performance. Create characters that are verbal, nonverbal, animated, puppet, live human actors, costumed characters, personas, comedy, dramatic, etc.!

If you have a character you’re working on, please bring it as you’ll get to put everything into practice during the second half of the workshop.

WHEN: Sunday, September 26th, 4pm-6pm PDST and MST (Check with your local google to find out what time it begins in your area!)

WHERE: Zoom! Which means ANYWHERE!

SKILLS REQUIRED:  Listening, watching, following along at home, interacting with instructor, answering questions

WHO: This event is for ages 13+ (Younger okay with parental supervision)


About the Instructor: 

Michael is well known for creating branded puppet characters including, “Nadia Coma: The World’s Oldest Gymnast” and MTV’s “CJ and Peanut” as well as training casts of “The Lion King” and “Avenue Q”.  His credits include: The Tonight Show, The Grammy Awards, Sex and the City,  America’s Got Talent, Sesame Street, The Ten co-starring with Paul Rudd & Winona Ryder,  27 Dresses opposite Katherine Heigl and with Kevin Spacey in  The Ventriloquist.   Voicing and puppeteering for Jim Henson Productions, Saturday Night Live, Dick Clark, MTV, Walt Disney Productions, and numerous national commercial campaigns. 

Michael has toured with Lewis Black, Joan Rivers, Lisa Lampanelli, Margaret Cho, Jeff Foxworthy, Rita Rudner, Phyllis Diller, Drew Carey, Wynonna Judd, James Brown, The Pointer Sisters, and more. 

After an audience with Her Royal Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II he garnered Atlantic City Magazine’s “Act of the Year”  and in recent years has written or directed for Robert DeNiro, Sheri Polo, John Travolta, “Real Time with Bill Maher,” “The Friar’s Roasts,”  coverage writing for numerous stage and television productions along with editorials for The Huffington Post, USA Today, LaughSpin and his critically acclaimed book, Breaking Out of Show Business (Post Hill Publishing).

His published works include comedic editorials for USA Today, Huffington Post and LaughSpin. His new book “Breaking Out of Show Business: What I Discovered by Not Being Discovered” (by Post Hill Publishing) can be found at numerous book outlets including Barnes and Noble.
Michael resides in Los Angeles and continues to work in movies, television and as a comedy writer & script  and show consultant.

TECH:

You do NOT need to be in the Phoenix area for this workshop, however you DO need a computer/device with a camera and microphone so your instructor can see and hear what you’re doing, You’ll also need a stable internet connection. Please use headphones if you are able. You’ll receive an email from Puppet Pie with a zoom invitation/link the night before the event.  Please check your spam folder and then reach out on our contact page if you haven’t received it 2 hours before the event. (Remember, if all else fails, your smartphone or tablet on a tripod is a fine camera!)
